Archimate

Archimate is een modelleertaal voor IT architecturen.

Archimate is ontwikkeld door Telin - het telematica instituut in Nederland, samen met enkele grote bedrijven en instituten, zoals Capgemini, de Belastingdienst, Getronics, Ordina, een aantal universiteiten.

De Archimate taal is gebaseerd op de UML modelleertaal. Het wordt gebruikt om architecturen te modelleren die meerdere domeinen omvatten. Door Archimate te gebruiken krijgt men een gelaagd model van de business, bestaande uit business-, applicatie- en technologie architecturen in één plaatje. Het idee achter Archimate is dat de impact van een verstoring of een wijziging in één component van de architectuur kan worden geprojecteerd op andere componenten, die zich mogelijk in andere domeinen bevinden. Een voorbeeld kan zijn dat "what-if" scenario's kunnen worden uitgevoerd: Wat zou er gebeuren als we het mainframe uitfaseren? Welke componenten in het hele bedrijf zouden dan worden geraakt?

Archimate is gebaseerd op het gebruik van het services concept, maar niet op de manier waarop services in SOA worden gebruikt. Services in Archimate zijn vooral tekentechnieken. De services hoeven niet noodzakelijkerwijs geïmplementeerd te worden in software. 

Er zijn verschillende tools beschikbaar voor het modelleren in Archimate. De meest bekende zijn BiZZdesign Architect , ARIS ArchiMate Modeler en Casewise Corporate Modeler. Er zijn ook (gratis) Visio templates beschikbaar als u eerst wat ervaring wilt opdoen met de Archimate symbolen. Hier is een overzicht van de gebruikte symbolen.

De waarde van Archimate zit hem vooral in het kunnen modelleren van een enterprise architectuur op een hoog niveau. 

Als een architectuur in Archimate is gemodelleerd, dan zou de volgende stap kunnen zijn om de modellen in wat meer detail uit te werken. Dit kan het beste door gebruik te maken van tools die het best passen bij het betreffende domein. Applicatie domein architecturen kunnen het best in UML worden gemodelleerd, terwijl technische (infrastructuur) architecturen meestal in Visio worden gemodelleerd.

Hoewel Archimate een Nederlandse ontwikkeling is, is er onlangs aansluiting gezocht tussen de Archimate Foundation en de Open Group. De Open Group heeft haar intenties uitgesproken om Archimate te adopteren als een onafhankelijke standaard voor enterprise architectuur modellering. Hierdoor zal Archimate waarschijnlijk binnenkort veel meer internationale aandacht krijgen.
