Information Lifecycle Management - Wat is ILM

Bedrijven produceren tegenwoordig een onvoorstelbare hoeveelheid data per jaar. Gemiddeld groeit de hoeveelheid data zo'n 30-70% per jaar (afhankelijk van het soort bedrijf). Een groot deel van deze data wordt drie maanden na de creatie ervan zelden meer geraadpleegd.

Opslag van data is duur. Hoewel de opslagcapaciteit per harde schijf sterk groeit per jaar, groeit de opslagbehoefte nog sterker. Ook het beheer van al die data kost geld. De data moet geback-upt worden, en de schijfcapaciteit moet steeds worden aangevuld.

Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) is het opslaan van data op de voor die specifieke data meest economische drager.

Als data wordt gecreëerd (u schrijft bijvoorbeeld een rapport), dan kan de data worden opgeslagen op een snelle, dure SCSI schijf. De eerste maand bent u bezig met het rapport, en lezen verschillende mensen het document. Maar na 2 maanden heeft iedereen het rapport gelezen, en wordt het bijna niet meer geopend. ILM software kan dit document dan automatisch verplaatsen naar een goedkopere, langzamere IDE schijf.

De plaats van de data wordt door de ILM software gemaskeerd, de gebruiker denkt dat het document nog op de gewone plaats staat. Men kan er dus nog gewoon bij, maar het opvragen gaat niet meer zo flitsend als in het begin.

Na een jaar kan het document automatisch door de ILM software worden verplaatst naar een tape. Als het document nu wordt opgevraagd, kan het enkele minuten duren voordat het beschikbaar komt, omdat het van (heel goedkope) tape moet worden gelezen.

Mocht een document weer vaker worden geraadpleegd, dan kan de ILM software het document weer op duurdere, snelle storage plaatsen.

ILM is een hype in opslagland. Onder andere IBM, Storagetek, Hitachi, Legato, Veritas, EMC en HP leveren Information Lifecycle Management oplossingen.
